BPA is a health and safety concern, as it exhibits hormone-like characteristics that are potentially harmful. If you're not up to speed on the whole controversy surrounding BPA, may I suggest you read this and this. It warms my heart to read that Canada was the first country in the world to declare BPA as a toxic substance.
Now, I'll be honest, those Pyrex containers are pricey - especially if you're trying to replace a whole kitchen's worth of storage containers. A great way to begin to move away from plastics in your kitchen and towards safer alternatives like glass is to UPCYCLE your household glass containers: Pickle jars, jam jars, mason jars, glass juice containers, olive jars, spice jars, just about any glass jar you can think of can provide you with affordable, safe, storage in your kitchen and on the go. Better yet, you are re-using something, rather than tossing it into the trash ( BIG NO NO!) or recycling (while I'm an avid recycler, I realize that the processing involved in re-cycling uses precious energy and water, which we can save by re-using).
If your kitchen is already stocked with glass containers, you can still re-use your jars! If you like to look at pinterest, you can literally find hundreds of creative ideas for re-using glass bottles! From storing notions, growing herbs, or holding candles - there's so many uses you can play with!
My project for the rest of this year is to hang on to all the spice jars we go through and fill them with a homemade spice rub to give as gifts around the holidays. My friend Shawnna gave us a similar gift this last holiday season and it was one of our favorite things! Thanks for the inspiration Shawnna!
So, next time you eat the last pickle - save that jar, you can make it go far!
Much Love and Namaste,
